Runway and Taxiway Rehabilitation Program

Aviation

Project Description

The program provided new pavement surface for the entire runway and taxiway system at the Grand Strand Airport.  Accomplished over two projects, the work included a new unbonded concrete overlay for Runway 05-23, with asphalt overlay on associated taxiways.  Additionally, two taxiways were relocated to comply with FAA geometry standards, requiring new pavement sections that included asphalt, stone base and select fill subbase. Related work included milling, new edge lighting, pavement marking, earthwork and drainage improvements.  In an effort to allow for continuous operations during construction, the team assisted the Owner in converting the parallel TW A into a visual only (VFR) temporary runway.  This effort required planning and programming in the form of alternatives analysis to achieve agency buy-in.  The combined budget of the multi-year program was approximately $11M.  Through the efforts of all involved, the final cost came in over $200K under budget.
